First , you'll
need an idea of the type of job you are looking for... and
you'll need a CV.
This is a big
subject in its own right, and not what we want to get into
in this piece.
(If you need to get your CV sorted, visit the
CV Sites & Services page.)
Secondly,
you'll want to sign up to a few major job boards, where
employers and recruitment agencies can find your CV. (See
the top section on the Homepage.)
It is
free to post your details, although it can be time
consuming: Each job board will have a different format. Some
will let you upload your CV as a Microsoft Word document. Others
require you to type (or paste) your details into
their own specific forms. Once they have all your candidate
information in their database, recruiters can find you if
you match their search criteria.
Next,
if you're
willing to invest a little in your job search (and if you
want to be particularly lazy) you can have your CV sent
directly to recruiters, instead of them having to find you.
One such service in the UK is CV Submit
Express. For less
than £30.00 they will submit your CV to over 5000
recruitment agencies. You can choose which agency groups by
industry sector or geography, or you can submit to all of
them.
CV
Trumpet provides a similar service.
And when
you're feeling not so lazy…
Of course
you'll want to do your own searches for job vacancies.
Revisit those job boards where you posted your CV, and do
your own searches through the posted jobs. You can normally
apply for jobs directly through the sites.
Outside of
the usual internet job hunt channels there is a hidden gem
of sorts... The Classifieds site. In the old days, newspaper
want ads provided the most valuable public resource for the
job seeker. These days they have been overshadowed by the
Internet.
Interestingly
though, Internet classifieds are an opportunity most job seekers
overlook. This can be an advantage to the relatively few who venture
there. It is also an inroad to locate those employers who
would rather not pay agency fees. That is, those who aren't on the books of the recruitment consultants. And
if it's appropriate you can even create a listing
advertising your services. For free in many cases. Now
that's the opposite of being lazy!
Gumtree.com
is the UK's largest classified site. Others of note are Preloved
and Vivastreet
UK.
The Interview
Unfortunately
there's no lazy man's way to prepare for an interview. And I
could sit here and go through all the basics you've heard
many times before - Research the company, know your CV
inside and out...
But if it's been
a long time since your last interview, you might want some
specialist help to
brush up on your interviewing skills.
Why not take advantage of the exchange rates and download
this ebook from the US for about a fiver. Written by a
Human Resources master who's interviewed hundreds of
candidates over 20 years, "Ace Your Next Job
Interview!" is full of great interview preparation
tips. And it's an instant
download.
If you're
really serious about getting into shape for interviews you
could
have a look at Interview
Gold. This is a comprehensive, interactive
online system that will sharpen your interview skills
through practice, helping you to build the confidence you'll
need when the day comes.
Another
useful tool is the PeopleMaps
Personality Test. When you take personality type tests
as part of the interview process... This is like peeking at
the results! They will also give you tips on how you can
best use this to your advantage.
Good luck!
